This 9 Days Hard Trek Cao Bang, Ba Be National Park has just been released by Lotussia Travel, taking you to the most remotest hill tribe villages in northern Vietnam. The hiking package is designed for those who don’t care about the comfort, but the beautiful landscapes, nature, mountains, paddy fields, and the rich ethnic culture. Taking this 9 day north east Vietnam off the beaten path trek, you have the chance to be the first foreigners to discover these untouched places!
DAY 1: HANOI -> BA BE NATIONAL PARK
8.00am picked up at your hotel in Hanoi and brought to Ba Be national park, Bac Kan province. Stop on the way, in Thai Nguyen city to visit the local ethnology museum. This is the largest museum of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities, spread over an area of 39,000 m2 in Vietnam and was established in 1960. It exhibits more than 10,000 documents and artefacts, which belong to the cultural heritage of 54 ethnic tribes of Vietnam. Lunch is served in a local restaurant en route. Arrival in Ba Be national park at about 15.00. If time permit, enjoy the boat trip on Ba Be lakes. Ba Be Lake is the largest natural lake in Vietnam. Having been formed approximately 200 million years ago, the lake is surrounded by limestone cliffs, which in turn are covered by primary forests. Dinner and overnight at local home – homestay.
DAY 2: BA BE NATIONAL PARK TREKKING
After breakfast, you start the day activities by hiking to Coc Toc village. This village is inhabited by the Tay people. Crossing the Pe Lu stream, you will then have some rough and steep terrain to cover, but not for too long, and after this, the hike becomes a little easier. Make a stop in a H’mong village, we will have a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, the trail goes through mountains and valleys. Make another stop to visit a Dzao village. You arrive then the Dau Dang waterfall is located on the border of the two provinces – Bac Kan and Tuyen Quang. Dinner and overnight at local home – homestay.
DAY 3: BA BE NATIONAL PARK TREKKING
Breakfast at the home stay. Prepare for another full day hike in Ba Be. Hike along the Nang river for a while before arrival in another Tay village, make stop for lunch. In the afternoon, keep hiking for another 3 hours to the village of the Red Dzao. The remote village is only accessible to walkers and horses. You get the chance to make a stop in a primary school to see curious and smiling kids. Dinner and overnight with a local family.
DAY 4: BA BE NATIONAL PARK -> PHIA DEN -> CAO BANG
Depart for Phja Den which is located at about 3 hour drive from Ba Be national park. Phja Den is situated at 1300m above the sea level, and mostly inhabited by the Nung. The weather is almost dry and cool all year round. The place is best known to Vietnamese people by its local vermicelli and green tea. You get the chance to visit a local factory before having lunch. After lunch, you will be taken by car to the start of the hiking trail. Trek for about 2 hours on roads on gravels, then the road get narrower as you hike through the forest. At about 4 – 5pm you arrive in a Red Dzao village which is beautifully set along a mountain side and paddy fields. Dinner and overnight at local home – homestay.
Special notes: this remote village still stays away from tourism. Facilities are very limited. Ask your Lotussia Travel consultant for updated information about lodging facilities such as hot water, shower, beds…
DAY 5: CAO BANG -> BAO LAC
After breakfast, you start the day activities by hiking uphill for about 1 hour. This is a small dirt road which goes through the forest. The second part of the trail goes mostly downhill to Lun Mua. There you will be picked up by your car and brought to Khuoi Khon. Travel along the national road #34 for about 3 hours before you see a small dirt road on your right. Take that road to get to Khuoi Khon village. The village is located at about 1000m above the sea level, and mostly inhabited by the black Lolo. The villagers still wear traditional clothes and keep their manners and customs. Dinner and overnight at local home.
DAY 6: BAO LAC TREKKING
breakfast at local home. The morning hike takes about 3-4 hours. You trek through forest, plantations and hill tribe villages of the H’mong. Lunch is provided in a local restaurant. After lunch, the hike is easier as you walk on road of gravels. After about 6K, you turn right, following a small hiking trail running along a beautiful valley. You see on the way mountains, forest, terraced paddy fields, corn fields, M’mong houses…You reach the Bac Lun village around late afternoon. This is another village that still stays away from tourism. This is another hill tribe village which still stays away from tourism. Facilities are very limited. Diner and overnight at local home.
DAY 7: BAO LAC TREKKING
Early breakfast at local home. Early departure is advised since today is the hardest day of the 12 day trip. There are about 8 hour hiking on rocky trails, and single dirt track. The first portion is tough as you mostly go uphill. Trekking through remote hill tribe villages, rice fields and plantation. Stop on the way to visit a local house. You arrive in a small town at about 9am. There is a small market which is open on the 5th and the 10th day lunar month. Spend a little time to discover the authentic market before being picked up by scooters and brought to Lu Pen (6K uphill). Keep hiking on the rocky trail to another H’mong village. Trekking this portion is hard and tough. Arriving in a H’mong village after 2-3 hours. Stop for lunch. Then continue hiking through the forest to reach Nam Van. This portion is also tough – you hike mostly in the forest. Dinner and overnight at local home.
DAY 8: BAO LAC -> CAO BANG
Breakfast at local home. Today is less difficult as you mostly hike downhill. Start the day activities at about 8.00am, you go uphill for a while then downhill until you see the village of Vai Khau. Make a short stop to visit the village. Then keep trekking on rocky trails to Nam Nu. There are other villages on the way. Make stop to discover these villages if time permit. Reach the Nung village of Nam Nu at noon. Have lunch. Picked up by your car and brought to Cao Bang. The drive takes about 3 hours past beautiful valleys and rice fields. Arriving Cao Bang town, check into a local hotel for overnight.
DAY 9: CAO BANG -> HANOI
After breakfast, enjoy the full day drive back to Hanoi. You can also make trip extensions towards Ha Giang, Sapa, or Halong bay. Contact us for suggestions.
