Ngoan Muc Pass, also known to the French as Bellevue Pass (altitude 980m) is about 5km towards Phan Rang and Thap Cham from Dan Nhim Lake and 64km west of Phan Rang.
On a clear day you can see all the way across the coastal plain to the Pacific Ocean (an aerial distance of 55km)! As the highway winds down the mountain in a series of switchbacks, it passes under two gargantuan water pipes – still guarded by armed troops in concrete fortifications – that link Dan Nhim Lake with the hydroelectric power station.
To the south of the road (to the right as you face the ocean) you can see the steep tracks of the crémallère linking Thap Cham with Dalat. If you’re leaving Dalat for Phan Rang, sites of interest at the top of Ngoan Muc Pass include a waterfall next to the highway, pine forests and the old Bellevue train station.
