Quan Ho Singing Festival – Bac Giang

Quan Ho Singing Festival takes place on the 21st day of the first lunar month, in the framework of the Tho Ha pagoda festival in Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province. This is one of the highlights that make the cultural characteristics, and attractions of the festival.

The image of the female performer wearing crow beak shaped kerchief with cheerful face, timidly hides herself behind flat palm hat with fringes has left impressive impression to visitors when they came to the temple festival.

Almost every year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai from Tam Tang hamlet arrange her work to attend the festival to pray to Buddha, and to enjoy Quan Ho singing contest. The velvety lyrics fly away on the vast fields making the air of the spring festival more excited.

A male Quan Ho singing performer said: “We have been attending the singing festival for many years but we are still nervous, eagerly waiting for the love song to be sang out.” Since the last month, more than 20 members of the team have actively practiced. 16 times of participation in Quan Ho singing contest, Tho Ha always won the first prize and hope this year they continue to maintain the record.

Viet Yen is proud of their ancient Quan Ho villages. The district has 200 teams of Quan ho singing. Mr. Dao Trong Ca, Head of District Department of Culture and Information said: “Singing Quan Ho in the Bo Da pagoda festival attracted visitors’ attention. Not only elder people, many teenagers also participated in the festival. This is an opportunity for the villages, clubs to exchange their experience to maintain, and to develop Quan Ho vocal singing movement.

The Quan Ho singing festival has been recognized as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This year, there are 1,000 performers from 40 clubs coming to join the contest. Each unit performs 20 minutes on stage, the main items are ancient Quan Ho songs in the form of responding dialogues, by single performance, group singers, playing the musical instrument solo. At the same time, they sing their Quan Ho song on a boat in the Ao Mieu area.

In the past years, Viet Yen has opened many classes of Quan Họ song singing for the Seeds of Arts and supported them with costumes and musical Instruments. Every summer, the district organizes a festival of singing Quan Ho song for children. Many families have 4 generations who knew how to sing Quan Ho songs, the district has 4 elite artisans in total. The district develops plans for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, including Quan Ho songs performing, coordinates with the education sector to compile and publish materials, lyrics and music of the folk songs then putting into schools.
