Dong Ky Village Festival – Bac Ninh

The Dong Ky Village Festival is a traditional festival that celebrates the tutelary god of Dong Quang commune, Tu Son district, Bac Ninh province, northern Vietnam. The festival is held from the 4th to the 6th day of the first lunar month to honor the god’s great merit, who was known as Thien Cuong De. He was a skilled craftsman and a brave general who taught the villagers various trades and led them to fight against the enemies. One of the trades he taught was making crackers, which became a distinctive feature of the festival.

Dong Ky village has many historical and cultural relics that are preserved and displayed during the festival. The festival includes a procession of the god’s palanquin, a ritual of offering incense and prayers, and a competition of making and firing crackers. The crackers symbolize the strength and martial spirit of the villagers, who believe that the louder the crackers are, the more powerful they are to ward off evil forces and bring good weather, crops, and prosperity.

The festival also used to have other activities, such as carrying genitals, raising pigs and chickens, and parading soldiers, to recall the time when the god was alive and active.
