Van Don Quang Ninh, one of the 14 rural districts of Quang Ninh Province is located in the north-east region of Vietnam, about 4 hour drive from Hanoi. Van Don island covers an area of 551 km². It might not be an ideal place for trekking, hiking, cycling. But the area offers beautiful off the beaten path beach breaks, beach vacations, boat trip, camping, ans watersport holidays.

Van Don is divided into 1 township and 11 communes including Cai Rong, Dong Xa, Ha Long, Binh Dan, Doan Ket, Dai Xuyen, Van Yen, Minh Chau, Quan Lan, Ngoc Vung, Ban Sen, and Thang Loi.

When to go

Van Don’s climate is symbolic of the climate of North Vietnam weather; featuring all four seasons. In summer, it is hot, humid and rainy, while monsoons flourish. The average annual temperature recorded is 22.9 °C. In winter, it is cold (between 1 and 3 °C), dry, and sees little rainfall (between 150 mm and 400 mm). The average humidity is 82 percent. Annual average rainfall, influenced by north-eastern monsoons, varies between 1,700 mm and 2,400 mm (maximum recorded is 2751 mm), with rainfall concentrated in the summer months for 90 to 170 days, particularly in July and August.

Getting to Van Don

The best way to get to Van Don from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought to Cam Pha. From there, connect a speed boat for Van Don island. The journey takes about 5-6 hours on road. Those who are on budget can take local public bus from My Dinh/Gia Lam/Giap Bat bus station. Taking a guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended. A guide is really helpful in such an off the beaten track place like Van Don Vietnam.
