Tan Yen Bac Giang
Tan Yen Bac Giang, one of nine rural districts of Bac Giang province is located in the Northeast region of Vietnam, about 2 hours drive from Hanoi. Tan Yen district covers an area of 204 km². It might not be an ideal place for trekking and hiking. But the area offers beautiful off the beaten path road cycling tours which can be arranged for those who like discovering Vietnam countryside and rural villages.
Tan Yen district consists of 2 townships and 21 communes including Cao Thuong, Nha Nam, Que Nham, Viet Lap, Lien Chung, Cao Xa, Ngoc Ly, Ngoc Thien, Ngoc Chau, Ngoc Van, Hop Duc, Phuc Hoa, Tan Trung, An Duong, Lan Gioi, Dai Hoa, Quang Tien, Phuc Son, Lam Cot, Viet Ngoc, Song Van, and Lien Son.
Tan Yen is home of several talented people and many insurrections against the feudal regime under the Nguyen Dynasty in many areas like Yen The, Hiep Hoa, and Kim Anh. Among these insurrections, there is one uprising insurrection which was directed by Thong Thai during the beginning of the 19th.
When to go
Tan Yen has the dominant characteristics of the tropical, temperate climate zone of the Northern Plain Vietnam weather. The temperature, humidity and rainfall vary over months and seasons.
The climate in Tan Yen Bac Giang has been discerned in two distinct seasons – the hot, rainy season from May to September and the cold, dry season from November to March. The average temperature varies between 22–23 °C (72–73 °F); the maximum temperature recorded was 41 °C (106 °F) while the lowest temperature was 13 °C (55 °F).
Humidity values are in the range of 73% to 87%. The average rainfall is reported to be 1,953 millimetres (76.9 in). The annual sunshine hours of 1,500 to 1,700 hours is good to grow tropical and subtropical trees. The average wind velocity is 2.1 metres (6.9 ft)/s and the average atmosphere pressure is 757.71 mmHg.
Since Tan Yen is located away from Vietnam’s eastern coast and the East Sea, the incidence of hurricanes and storms is rare, although whirlwinds and hailstorms are a localized phenomenon in a few mountainous districts.
Getting to Tan Yen
The best way to get to Tan Yen from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought to Tan Yen directly. The journey takes about 2 hours on road. Those who are on budget can take local public bus from My Dinh bus station, Gia Lam bus station or Giap Bat bus station. Taking a guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended, especially when you travel to an off the beaten track destination like Tan Yen Vietnam.
What to do
Hiking
Tan Yen district is topographically flat and characterized by paddy fields and rural hamlets. There are both sealed roads and single dirt trails offering a variety of bike tours. Tan Yen district may not be an ideal place for taking a multi-day hike.

Attending local festivals
Cau Vong Festival, one of the most famous festival in Bac Giang province takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month in Tan Yen district. The festival is held to commemorate the excellence of generals who led Vietnamese people in resistances against colonialism. Usually, people will come to Tan Yen on the day before the festival starts. The festival begins with opening and worshiping ceremonies. After that, many attractive performances are performed vividly.
