Song Ma Son La offers some of best Vietnam off the beaten track holidays and soft adventure journeys in Vietnam. Song Ma is a mountainous district of Son La province in the northwest Vietnam. The district covers an area of 1,639 square kilometres.

Song Ma district contains 1 township and 18 communes including Song Ma, Bo Sinh, Chieng Cang, Chieng En, Chieng Khoong, Chieng Khuong, Chieng Phung, Chieng So, Dua Mon, Huoi Mot, Muong Cai, Muong Hung, Muong Lam, Muong Sai, Na Nghiu, Nam Man, Nam Ty, Pu Pau, and Yen Hung.

Getting to Song Ma

The best way to get to Song Ma district is to take the short internal flight from Hanoi to Na San airport, Son La province. From there, you can either hire a car or take a motor-taxi to be brought to Song Ma.

If you travel in a small group, hiring a car from Hanoi may be a better choice. The car journey takes about 4 hours on road. It offers you the chance to discover the northwest region of Vietnam.

There are public buses from Hanoi to Song Ma Son La. Both day buses and night buses are available at My Dinh bus station. Buses are usually full at weekend.

When to go

Song Ma features a tropical monsoon climate, which is characterized by torrential rains in the summer (from May to September) and cold and dry in winter (from November to January). Like many other travel places in the northern Vietnam, Song Ma also suffers from the influence of the dry and hot wind from Laos in summer which makes the weather intolerable sometimes.

Song Ma’s climate is divided into two distinct seasons. Winter lasts from October to March of the next year, and summer from April to September. The annual average temperature is 21.4oC.
