Mong Cai Quang Ninh, one of the 14 rural districts of Quang Ninh Province is located in the north-east region of Vietnam, about 4 hour drive from Hanoi. Mong Cai district covers an area of 515 km². It might not be an ideal place for trekking, hiking. But the area offers beautiful off the beaten path road cycling tours which can be arranged for those discover Vietnam countryside and rural villages.

Mong Cai is divided into 8 wards and 9 communes including Hoa Lac, Tran Phu, Ka Long, Ninh Duong, Tra Co, Hai Yen, Hai Hoa, Binh Ngoc, Bac Son, Hai Tien, Hai Dong, Hai Xuan, Hai Son, Quang Nghia, Van Ninh, Vinh Thuc, Vinh Trung.

Visitors are inspired by its beautiful natural landscape, Tra Co beach, famous sites such as cape Sa Vy, the Tra Co communal house and the Ka Long bridge, and by the local seafood. They are particularly interested in shopping at the Mong Cai Trading Center, one of Vietnam’s busiest border markets.

When to go

Mong Cai’s climate is symbolic of the climate of North Vietnam weather; featuring all four seasons. In summer, it is hot, humid and rainy, while monsoons flourish. The average annual temperature recorded is 22.9 °C. In winter, it is cold (between 1 and 3 °C), dry, and sees little rainfall (between 150 mm and 400 mm). The average humidity is 82 percent. Annual average rainfall, influenced by north-eastern monsoons, varies between 1,700 mm and 2,400 mm (maximum recorded is 2751 mm), with rainfall concentrated in the summer months for 90 to 170 days, particularly in July and August.

Getting to Mong Cai

The best way to get to Mong Cai from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought straight to Mong Cai. The journey takes about 4 hours on road. Those who are on budget can take local public bus from My Dinh/Gia Lam/Giap Bat bus station. Taking a guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended. A guide is really helpful in such an off the beaten track place like Mong Cai Vietnam.
