Hoa Binh Vietnam
Hoa Binh Vietnam offers beautiful off the beaten path jungle treks, hiking, trekking homestay, road cycling tours, mountain biking holidays, educational, community, student travel, motorbike, and motorcycle tours from Hanoi. Hoa Binh province is bordered by Phu Tho and Hanoi in the north, Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa in the south, Ha Nam in the east, and Son La in the west.
Hoa Binh province contains 1 city and 10 districts including Hoa Binh city, Cao Phong, Da Bac, Kim Boi, Ky Son, Lac Son, Lac Thuy, Luong Son, Hoa Binh, Tan Lac, and Yen Thuy. The topography is combined by mountains and narrow valleys.
The history
Hoa Binh Province was created on June 22, 1886 following the decree of Tonkin with the name Muong Province, splitting Muong majority areas from Hung Hoa Province, Son Tay Province, Hanoi and Ninh Binh Province. Its name derives from the Sino-Vietnamese 和平, meaning “peace.”
The province was administered from Cho Bo (in Da Bac District) hence it was also known as Cho Bo Province, until it November of the same year, it was relocated to Phuong Lam District (today in Bat Bat District, Hanoi). In April 1888 it was renamed to “Phuong Lam Province”, by the French colonial authorities.
On March 18, 1891 the Governor-General of French Indochina decreed that the name of the province would change to Hoa Binh Province with six districts: Luong Son, Ky Son, Lac Thuy, Hoa Binh, and Da Bac.
Getting to Hoa Binh
Road and water transportation are convenient. There is National Highway No. 6 from Hanoi to Hoa Binh, Son La. The National Highway No. 15 goes from Hoa Binh to Thanh Hoa; The National Highway No. 12B from Hoa Binh to Nho Quan (Ninh Binh). Da River is 5km from Hoa Binh City.
The best way to get to Hoa Binh from Hanoi is to hire a car with driver. There are also public buses going to Hoa Binh from Hanoi. Local taxis, Uber, and Grabcar are also available in Hanoi.
Booking a guided tour is highly recommended. An English-speaking guide is helpful in such off the beaten path place in Hoa Binh, northwest Vietnam.
When to go
Hoa Binh weather is portrayed by warm atmosphere all year round. The average temperature is about 26.7°C. The rainfall in Hoa Binh is relatively high, with the heavy rains in summer months. During a year, there are 160 days that the rainfall is about 1721mm. In months of spring, summer and autumn, the lighting hours of the sunshine is different. In autumn, winter and spring, the humidity in Hoa Binh is at the lowest point. Annually, the temperature averages at 23°C; the average rainfall 1.800mm/year; relative humidity of 85%; and average annual evaporation of 704mm.
The best time to travel Hoa Binh is from October to December (solar calendar), and the first month of lunar year, before and after Tet holiday of Vietnamese people. During this time, Hoa Binh is covered by beautiful white plum blossom. March is the period when white flowers spreading everywhere in Hoa Binh. From April to August, weather in Hoa Binh is cooler than in Hanoi. In summer, Hoa Binh is covered by a lush green color of jungles, paddy fields, and corn fields. Specifically, at the end of autumn, Hoa Binh features wealthy and vibrant beauty with yellow terraced fields of grain covering all hillsides. Peaceful natural and fascinating seasonal scenery cannot exaggerate the great beauty in Hoa Binh.
Best things to see and do
The culture of Hoa Binh combines several Vietnamese ethnic groups with their own languages, traditional literature, and festivals. Visitors especially enjoy the ethnic specialty dishes such as rice cooked in bamboo and grilled meat. At night, visitors can stay in stilt houses in Hoa Binh Valley, enjoy watching traditional dancing, music performances (bronze drums, gongs), and Thai minority singing and dancing. The remote Muong, Dao, Tay minority villages draw visitors who like study the life of ethnic groups. Beautiful brocade and forest products are interesting souvenirs.
Mountainous terrain with Thac Bo, Hoa Tien grottoes, Ret Cave, Pu Nooc Primitive forest and many clean springs are suitable for caving adventures, rock climbing, walking, and river kayaking. Visitors are also fascinated by superb beauty of Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Power Plant, the largest one in Vietnam. Taking a boat trip on Da River is relaxing and enjoyable.
