Cam Pha Quang Ninh, one of the 14 rural districts of Quang Ninh Province is located in the north-east region of Vietnam, about 4 hour drive from Hanoi. Cam Pha city covers an area of 336 km². It might not be an ideal place for trekking, hiking. But the area offers beautiful off the beaten path road cycling tours which can be arranged for those discover Vietnam countryside and rural villages.

Cam Pha is divided into 13 wards and 3 communes including Quang Hanh, Cam Thach, Cam Thuy, Cam Trung, Cam Thanh, Cam Tay, Cam Binh, Cam Dong, Cam son, Cam Phu, Cam Thinh, Cua Ong, Mong Duong, Duong Huy, Cong Hoa, and Cam Hai.

Cam Pha was the site of one of the biggest coal mines in south of Asia which has been exploited for almost a century. The coal mine featured on a special commemorative Vietnam stamp in March 1959. Coal still forms the basis of Cam Pha’s local economy, with other industries including quarrying, lime production, port, agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

When to go

Cam Pha’s climate is symbolic of the climate of North Vietnam weather; featuring all four seasons. In summer, it is hot, humid and rainy, while monsoons flourish. The average annual temperature recorded is 22.9 °C. In winter, it is cold (between 1 and 3 °C), dry, and sees little rainfall (between 150 mm and 400 mm). The average humidity is 82 percent. Annual average rainfall, influenced by north-eastern monsoons, varies between 1,700 mm and 2,400 mm (maximum recorded is 2751 mm), with rainfall concentrated in the summer months for 90 to 170 days, particularly in July and August.

Getting to Cam Pha

The best way to get to Cam Pha from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought straight to Cam Pha. The journey takes about 4 hours on road. Those who are on budget can take local public bus from My Dinh/Gia Lam/Giap Bat bus station. Taking a guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended. A guide is really helpful in such an off the beaten track place like Cam Pha Vietnam.
