Binh Da Festival – Hanoi

April 11

The Binh Da Festival is a celebration of the nation’s legendary ancestor, Lac Long Quan, who is regarded as the second Hung king of ancient Vietnam.

According to legend, Lac Long Quan was the son and heir of Kinh Duong Vuong, the first Hung king who ruled over Xich Quy, the original name of Vietnam. Lac Long Quan married Au Co, who gave birth to a sac containing 100 eggs that hatched into 100 children. These children are believed to be the ancestors of the 100 Vietnamese family names.

Lac Long Quan passed away in Ba Go (also known as Tam Thai Hill), and to commemorate his death, the Binh Da Festival is held every year from the third to the sixth day of the third lunar month. The festival features traditional ceremonies and cultural activities such as folk games and calligraphy art.
