Boat Race Festival – Quang Binh

September 2

Quang Binh Boat Racing Festival takes place on the 2nd September on Kien Giang River, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh province in the north central region of Vietnam. It is an annual event held to promote national unity and sportsmanship in the hometown of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

The boat race was originally a part of a traditional festival praying for good weather and abundant crops. Young people participated in the sports as a way to prepare themselves in a struggle against natural disasters.

In the past, Quang Binh Boat Racing Festival was held every six years, in the years of Mouse and Horse. The race ended with buong phao ceremony to commemorate the persons who drowned. Le Thuy Boat Racing Festival took place in spring or in the sixth lunar month after the harvest.

After the declaration of independence was announced on September 2, the locals started holding a bigger race annually to celebrate National Day. This year, 24 boats participated in the men’s race and 9 boats in the women’s race. 1,000 people competed on the 24km race for men and 18km race for women.
