New project targets tourism in Ha Giang

The number of tourists heading to the northern province of Ha Giang has recently shot up thanks to international tourist agencies offering tours to the area, the provincial Department of Commerce and Tourism said at a recent seminar in Bac Me District, Ha Giang Province.

More than 250 delegates, including 35 representatives from international travel agencies, attended the seminar entitled Solutions to Develop Public Tourism.

"Developing public tourism is an important part of developing tourism in the province," said Vuong Mi Vang, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee. The province has taken steps to open the villages to public tourism, where visitors have direct access to the people rather than being courted around by a tour guide.

"The culture of ethnic groups in Ha Giang is a rare resource that can promote tourism," he said. "Many neighbouring provinces such as Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang and Lao Cai support Ha Giang in promoting the culture and developing the economy."

Many cultural villages have been built to develop public tourism in each district. Tourists can visit 26 cultural villages in the province according to Nguyen Trung Thuong, director of the Ha Giang Culture and Information Department.

Lan Village in Yen Phu Commune is one typical village showing the customs and traditions of Tay the ethnic group.

"Many specialities are developed such as brocade, maize wine, shan tuyet tea and glutinous rice," said Nong Quoc Trong, head of Lan Village. "We are restoring traditional industries and cultural values such as then and luon singing.

"Visitors can learn about the culture and lifestyle [of the local people] by staying in private houses and enjoying ethnic people’s home cooking," he added, saying of the 37 households of the village, five are welcoming travellers.

"Leaders of the province should concentrate on promising regions such as Dong Van Plateau and Ha Giang Town," said Vu The Binh, head of the Viet Nam Administration of Tourism’s Travel Department. "They should aim to protect culture and tourism resources. Ha Giang Province should refuse projects with negative effects on the environment." — VNS
